01 / Getting started

Three steps.
Then make it yours.

A homebrew-enabled Vita running firmware 3.60 or higher, with VitaShell, is required.
The companion app is completely optional.

Compatibility: Built on a PS Vita 1000 running 3.60 Ensō. Compatibility may vary.

  1. 01

    Install Test Utility

Drag and drop the installer VPK over USB, or copy it by FTP, to ux0:/data/install/. Install it in VitaShell. This adds the Test Utility bubble.

  2. 02

    Install the bundled apps

Open Test Utility → Set up lumaXMB. Press × and wait for setup to finish. This installs lumaXMB, Adrenaline helper and the required resources.

  3. 03

    Open lumaXMB

Choose Launch lumaXMB in Test Utility, or open its bubble. Follow Initial Setup to choose your look and scan your library.

After setup

Three bubbles, three roles. Test Utility handles setup and sessions. lumaXMB is your main interface. Adrenaline helper supports direct PSP launches through Adrenaline. You can open lumaXMB normally without enabling a session. Leave autoboot off in this alpha.

What do the Test Utility install actions do?
ActionWhat happens
Set up lumaXMBChecks the bundled packages, installs missing or older lumaXMB and Adrenaline helper apps, and adds the required resources. Same or newer installed app versions are retained. This does not enable a session or autoboot.
Launch lumaXMBOpens the installed app. It does not change your session mode.
Install staged XMB updateIn Maintenance, installs a verified update staged by the paired Companion workflow. Close lumaXMB first. Normal VPK installation in VitaShell also works.
Full verificationIn Maintenance, checks the bundled packages, installed apps and system sounds. It reports the result without replacing files.

Keep power connected while setup is installing. If setup is interrupted, choose Set up lumaXMB again to resume. Session modes are a separate choice below.

Optional: native in-game menu & return to lumaXMB

Optional integration

Start with a temporary session.

lumaXMB opens and plays media without a session. A session enables the native in-game menu and return-to-lumaXMB integration around games and apps.

Temporary sessions are the supported option in this alpha. See the update notes below if you previously enabled a permanent session.

Temporary session

For this boot

Enables session features until you stop the session or restart the Vita. After a restart, start it again in Test Utility when you want those features.

  1. Close lumaXMB. Open Test Utility → Temporary global session → Start temporary session.
  2. Press × again to confirm. If prerequisite setup restarts the Vita, reopen Test Utility and start the session again.
  3. To end it, choose Stop temporary session, or restart the Vita.
Start temporary session enables the native menu and game return until stopped or restarted.

03 / On your PC Completely optional

Your media.
Ready for your Vita.

The completely optional Windows companion puts your media library, cover artwork and transfers in one workspace. lumaXMB works without it.

lumaXMB Media Manager

The library comes with you.

Browse the Vita’s games, albums, movies and photos from your PC. See what has artwork, choose your own image, or look for a matching cover online.

  • Music: add album or artist folders with their tracks and cover art.
  • Movies: add MP4 files with their posters.
  • Games: manage cover artwork for Vita, PSP and PS1 entries.
  • Photos & folders: add photo folders and choose extra library locations to scan.

Transfers use USB or FTP. The Companion places supported media and artwork where lumaXMB expects them.
